Residential Fire Sprinklers

The West Metro Fire Protection District proudly supports the municipalities within our borders that have adopted the International Residential Code (IRC) requiring residential fire sprinklers in all new residential construction.  Residential sprinklers are an affordable, reliable and effective life saving tool that is the best way to protect you and your family from the deadly and catastrophic effects of residential fires.

Fire is fast. Would you have time to escape a home fire?

Did you know a house fire can become deadly in as little as two minutes? Fires burn quickly and are more deadly today because of what we have in our homes. Our furniture and belongings are made of plastics and synthetics that make fires burn faster – and they produce deadly smoke. Common unprotected lightweight building materials, flooring and open designs can cause fires to spread quickly.

Home fire sprinklers control a fire, so everyone can escape.

Only the sprinkler closest to the fire activates. That stops the fire and deadly smoke from spreading. Fire sprinklers work automatically and immediately. It’s like having a firefighter on duty 24 hours a day.

Permits and Approvals

The IRC provides two ways to comply with the residential fire sprinkler requirement.  The system can be designed and installed to the requirements of either section P2904 of the IRC OR to the requirements of NFPA 13D.   If the system is designed to P2904, the building department will conduct your review, issue your permit, and conduct all related inspections.  If the system is designed to NFPA 13D, then the West Metro Fire Protection District will conduct your review, issue your permit, and conduct all related inspections.  To submit a residential fire sprinkler system designed to the requirements of NFPA 13D, please visit our 'Construction and Building Services' webpage.
